How Many Sheds Can I Have On My Property [Things To Avoid]

Sheds are significant for a property that allows you to store the equipment and tools you need regularly. Nowadays, people love gardening, and they prefer building more than one shed on their property to store garden tools, garden accessories, lawnmowers, etc.

How many sheds you can build on your property totally depends on the zoning rules of your area. In some places, you are allowed to build more than one storage shed while others only allow a single shed on a property of a single-family residence district.

However, I’ve listed the shed building permit rules of some states, that tell about the required size, height, and distance from your house of a shed that doesn’t need any permits.

Too many tools require additional space in your property that a single shed can not fulfill but building more than one shed on a property without knowing your state rules and regulations could keep you in trouble.

If you want to build a shed, you will need to obtain a building permit from your local government authority. There are some rules that you will have to abide by before you can build a shed on your property.

In Guidingpapa I’ve listed the rules and regulations of different states regarding building sheds on your property. I have also cleared some very important doubts related to sheds building in this article.

So without further ado…

Let’s get started…

Why You Need Building And Zonal Permits To Build Shed On Your Property?

There are three very strong reasons behind such type of permit:

Reason 1: Reducing The Risk Of Damage During Flood And Storms

The local government of Florida wants to reduce the risk of damage during a flood and storm-like natural disaster and wants that the residents of Florida give detail about the anchoring and materials of building sheds.

This way the government ensures that the shed doesn’t detach from the ground in a storm.

This information helps prevent damage to the surrounding property due to a detached shed in a storm.

Reason 2: Set Back Requirement Of Sheds

People usually prefer to build sheds rear of their property and the government wants to know whether a property’s rear area is suitable for building sheds.

This is why a setback requirement for building sheds on Florida property is necessary.

Reason 3: Building Something Else With The Name Of Shed

Florida residents must clear to the local government that the property is being used only for building sheds.

Many people don’t take seriously the local laws and community HOA guidelines and build tiny homes, guest houses, or something else with the name of a shed.

In Florida, you are allowed to build storage sheds in all zoning districts but you have to take care of a few very important things which are listed below:

  1. According to the Florida building code, you are allowed to build a shed of size 200 square feet which is only being utilized for storage purposes. You don’t need to take permits for such constructions on your property.
  2. Make sure the location of your shed must not prevent any driveway, or cause trouble to pedestrians, cyclists, or motorists.
  3. Make sure that the location of your shed which you are going to build on the rear or side of your property shall be 5 feet far from your property line.

The shed must be setback at the 3 feet distance from the rear and side lot lines and 10 feet distance from the surrounding structures.

4. Toronto Ontario Shed Permits Law
